Master of Arts in Theological Studies at North Park Theological Seminary

The Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) at North Park Theological Seminary is designed for students seeking academic depth in a focused theological discipline—whether preparing for doctoral study, teaching, or deepening your service in the church. The curriculum features foundational coursework across biblical studies, theology, history, spiritual formation, and elective concentrations, plus a selected area of academic focus in Old Testament, New Testament, Theology/Ethics, Church History, Cross-Cultural Ministry, or a custom area of inquiry (with approval from the academic cabinet).

A hallmark of the program is the required master’s thesis, where you’ll pursue research in your chosen field and emerge with the skills and confidence to contribute to scholarly and congregational conversations. The 60-90 page thesis is defended to a faculty committee and can become a starting point for doctoral work.

This research-focused degree is ideal for future scholars, teachers, or lay leaders who want advanced theological training but are not seeking ordination or pastoral roles. MATS students benefit from a vibrant seminary community, mentoring from PhD faculty, and flexible course formats to support serious academic inquiry.
